French journalists Marc Epstein and Jean Paul Guilloteau, jailed by Pakistani authorities on charges of violating their visa restrictions, began a hunger strike today in protest against their arrest, their lawyer said.
"We are hereby announcing that we are going on hunger strike for an indefinite period. We are professional journalists but we don't know why we are being treated as criminals. We will only take water," their lawyer quoted them as saying.
The pair were arrested last week by Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for violating their visas by visiting the south-western city of Quetta near the Afghanistan border. Police confiscated a computer and notebook from Epstein and digital camera memory cards and videotape from Guilloteau, according to Reporters Without Borders.
